GWAR headlined a show at Warehouse Live Midtown in Houston, Tx on November 17th, 2024 with support from Dark Funeral and Squid Pisser on The Stoned Age Tour!
GWAR is an American heavy metal band originating from Richmond, Virginia and was formed in 1984. Their current lineup consists of rhythm guitarist Mike Derks (Balsac the Jaws of Death), drummer Brad Roberts (Jizmak Da Gusha), co-lead vocalist Matt Maguire (Sawborg Destructo), lead guitarist/backing vocalist Tommy Meehan (Grodius Maximus/Squid Pisser vocalist), backing vocalist Bob Gorman (Bonesnapper), lead vocalist Michael Bishop (Blothar the Berserker), and bassist/backing vocalist Casey Orr (Beefcake the Mighty).
Shock rock gods GWAR took their outrageous brand of heavy metal theater back on the road for “The Stoned Age” tour. The Intergalactic Alien Overlords brought their most unhinged and entitlement-skewering show to Warehouse Live. Black metal icons Dark Funeral, and the savage hardcore weirdness of Squid Pisser set the stage for GWAR‘s visceral onslaught.
According to GWAR’s Blothar the Berserker:
This is an incredible time in history, so much death and destruction in the face of senseless entitlement and arrogant darkness. We cannot wait to shock some sense into humanity with the most outrageous performance of heavy metal theater ever to descend from the gods.”
GWAR thundered on stage and brought pure shock and awe. The venue was packed with fans in white T-shirts ready for the band to make its mark with blasts of fake blood and other bodily fluids. The venue had prepared for this event by covering themselves and wrapping their gear in plastic, which I did too in preparation for the night’s festivities.
They wasted no time in bringing a mix of gore, comedy, and political commentary to the packed venue. Starting off the night with a bloated Trump and massive rear-ended Kamala Harris battling back and forth. Trump was only the first politician in line to be decimated. Obama walked on stage and was quickly beheaded causing his neck to spew fake blood everywhere. Bush, Lincoln, Jefferson, a huge Washington, Reagan, and a seemingly confused Biden followed directly after. Each time they were either beheaded, disemboweled, limbs severed, or sometimes all three. This was to the delight of many fans, who were by this time completely covered in blood and guts. GWAR concluded their set with “America Must Be Destroyed” and encored with “Fuck This Place,” which seemed to be a statement to the current political climate that we’re in.
Witnessing the crowd leave covered in all different colors (from the onslaught) with massive smiles on their faces was an absolute joy. GWAR remains a timeless band. Their unique show and mythology is unlike any other band. They have been performing for decades and hopefully continue for many generations to come.
Consider yourself warned – “The Stoned Age” tour came to wage beautiful metal anarchy.
