Crosses ††† headlined at House of Blues in Houston, TX on February 27th, 2024 on their Familiar World Tour! Not only is this tour in support of their second full length album “Goodnight, God Bless, I Love U, Delete.“, but it’s the band’s second full scale tour ever! The band has not properly toured since 2014.
Crosses ††† is an American side project of Deftones singer Chino Moreno and Far guitarist Shaun Lopez. Originating from Los Angeles, California and was formed in 2011.
Following a warmup set from DJ Crook (CrookOne), who previously performed with Moreno in Team Sleep, the dynamic duo took the stage illuminated by their iconic symbol of three luminescent crosses (†††).
Opening with “Invisible Hand“, the energy was through the roof for their highly anticipated return! The intro to that song couldn’t have been a better start for their set. Lopez took his position with his guitar and synths in place center stage, while Moreno rapidly paced side to side across the stage.
They really set the tones with their lighting and visuals. Although they were primarily backlit striking smooth silhouettes, they were also illuminated with overhead lighting at times. With visuals fitting their band’s aesthetic, featuring dancers and gymnasts moving to the beat.
Moreno’s haunting voice soared over their cold ambient sound! His shrill screams pierced through the sound barrier as Lopez mastered the synths. While Crosses is much more moody and melodic, Moreno is not afraid to let out his signature scream reminiscent of a banshee at times. Those screams will truly bring chills down your spine and leave your body tingling with goosebumps.
Over the course of an hour and a half they performed eighteen songs, six of which were from their latest release “Goodnight, God Bless, I Love U, Delete.“. This really demonstrated their level of confidence with their new work. Most bands either shy away from making a third of their set new content, or it doesn’t quite resonate with the crowd very well. This was certainly not the case for them. The crowd was enjoying every moment like it was their first and last time being able to witness them perform, which it very well could be considering their track record in the past.
Highlights from their set included performances of “This Is a Trick“, “Vivien“, “Initiation“, “Sensation“, “The Epilogue“, “Bitches Brew“, and one of their encore songs “Telepathy“. Also note they concluded their set, before performing their encore, with “Big Youth“. This track was featured in the soundtrack for the latest EA Sports game release “UFC 5“.
Their live performance was truly something to not only see, but to experience. It was actually so nice I went and saw them twice, which I’m glad I did because I was able to watch them perform my personal favorite, “Girls Float † Boys Cry“, off their new album!
