Kublai Khan TX headlined a SOLD OUT show at White Oak Music Hall in Houston, Tx on May 24th, 2023 with support from Harms Way, Pain of Truth, and Justice for the Damned on the second leg of their highly anticipated headlining tour!
Kublai Khan TX broadcasted a message:
This is a public emergency:
If your city is listed evacuation is already too late
Kublai Khan TX issued a statement:
“As a thank you for selling out so many shows and supporting our upcoming headliner, we want to give y’all a new bone to chew on. Low Tech – A meat and potatoes mosh metal landmine for all our Neanderthals out there. Brought to y’all smoking hot straight from the fire pit. Share it. Learn it. And see it live. Thanks for a great start to the year y’all.”
The band expressed their excitement about the tour stating:
“We haven’t done a proper headline tour in four long years!”
Kublai Khan TX is an American hardcore band originating from Sherman, Texas and was formed in 2009. Their current lineup consists of lead vocalist Matt Honeycutt, guitarist/vocalist Nolan Ashley, bassist/vocalist Eric English, and drummer Isaac Lamb. Nick Adams of Australian band Justice for the Damned is taking Nolan’s place on guitar.
They hosted a Texas Pre Party next door at Raven Tower from 3PM-6PM, which was an all ages event including a food truck, bar & lounge, and merch pop-up. Matt Honeycutt signed memorabilia and took photos with fans for the full duration!
Kublai Khan is at the peak of their career at the moment. They have reached the heights of their career so far and it’s great to see such a great band get bigger than ever. They went from performing at Walters Downtown with just 10 people, to selling out White Oak Music Hall with somewhere around 1,000 attendees. The energy being just as high at the smaller venue back in the day. No matter the amount of people they gave it their all and that’s the reason they’re so highly acclaimed in the hardcore music scene.
Matt speaking about Walters Downtown:
“God, I miss that fucking place!”
The party continued as the Texas hardcore icons started off with one of their fresh new singles “Theory of Mind“. Matt belts out the opening lyrics “Monkey see monkey do“, which only Kublai Khan TX can start a song like that and cause absolute havoc.
Matt commanded the audience’s energy:
“I know it’s hot. I know you’re tired, but look me deep in my eyes. I don’t give a fuck!”
Matt pointed at the middle of the pit, as they get into “Resentment” from the “Lowest Form of Animal EP“, and shouted “We’re not here to reinvent the wheel, we’re here to spin this motherfucker“. Those words could not ring truer, as with each song it felt like the crowd’s velocity continued to pick up.
Matt stated:
“There’s several cities in this country where I talk about the roots growing deep. This might be in the top three, as far as roots growing deep motherfucker! Thank you for sticking with us all these fucking years. Give it up!”
For years, Kublai Khan has consistently released great content. Their setlist was a showcase of their overall discography. The crowd was going absolutely wild during their set. Crowd surfing, two-stepping, and throwing down filled the room. The amount of movement during their set created so much heat and the venue got noticeably hotter during their performance.
Matt exclaimed:
“We have been a band forever. It’s been an uphill battle. We have been underpaid, underrated, and under estimated, not no more bitch!”
“It doesn’t matter what day it is. It’s get fucked up day!”
Matt dedicated “Truest Love” to all the single mothers and fathers, which is a song about the relationship falling apart and passing all that down to the child.
Matt dedicating “Truest Love”:
“I know how it went and how it goes. I see your struggle, but I also know your success. From us to you, this is the Truest Love.”
Unfortunately, they paused their set after “Self Destruct” due to a medical emergency in the crowd with a fan being incapacitated. This caused a few songs to be omitted from their setlist. One of which was “Eyes Up“, being the only song on their set from my personal favorite album of theirs “Balancing Survival & Happiness“. I’m very surprised “The Guilty Dog” and “Ghost Pains (Pt. III)” wasn’t part of their setlist, as these songs were staples in their career.
Once the medical issue was resolved, they resumed their set with “The Hammer” as if they never stopped. They concluded this eventful evening with their anthemic track “Antpile” as Matt screamed his iconic “Son of a bitch” and started barking as the guitar wailed throughout the crowd.
Matt exclaimed:
“From us to you, it’s been beautiful Houston!”
“Houston, Texas sold this motherfucker out!”
Kublai Khan TX is scheduled to return to Houston later this year on October 3rd.
