Underoath headlined a sold out show at House of Blues in Houston, Tx on November 19th, 2024 with support from Static Dress on the They’re Only Chasing Safety 20th Anniversary Tour!

Underoath is an American metalcore band originating from Tampa, Florida and was formed in 1997. Their current lineup consists of lead vocalist Spencer Chamberlain, lead guitarist/backing vocalist Timothy McTague, bassist Grant Brandell, keyboardist Christopher Dudley, and drummer/clean vocalist Aaron Gillespie.

Underoath originally released their critically acclaimed studio album They’re Only Chasing Safety on June 15, 2004, and were met with an outpouring of love and acclaim from fans and industry alike. The album has been RIAA certified Gold.

Underoath said in a press release:

“Twenty. Years. This is going to be like nothing we’ve ever done. ‘They’re Only Chasing Safety’ in full every night plus *another* set of songs voted on by each city. Every song from every album over the past 20 years will be on the table. Let’s get nuts.”

Underoath began their set by performing “They’re Only Chasing Safety” from front to back (well sort of). Starting with the last track on the record, “Some Will Seek Forgiveness, Others Escape”, drummer Aaron Gillespie sat on the couch singing with the stage only being lit with the lamps on the stage. They circled back around to the first track “Young and Aspiring” to be followed by their most popular hit “A Boy Brushed Red Living In Black and White”.

The rest of this iconic album was performed in sequence of the track listing. The lead single of the album, “Reinventing Your Exit” was performed a few songs later along with other huge hit “It’s Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door“. Chamberlain took full control of the audience as he charged over the barricade and had everyone joyously singing the chorus.

After playing every song off the record the show was yet to be over. They performed a fan voted set consisting of six songs. This was to be concluded with my personal favorite, “Writing on the Walls“.

Underoath continues to reinvent the balance between chaos and harmony. Their passion and power shines through with each and every song, whether it be anthemic or outright aggressive. Both this band and this album have been a staple for all of us elder and younger “emos”. They continue to revolutionize the industry while keeping this era alive. Witnessing “They’re Only Chasing Safety” being performed in it’s entirety was truly a treat.
